Mountains, Trials, and Hope

My Daily Musings-October 25th, 2026

I heard this quote in the audiobook, Treasures of the North, by Tracie Peterson, and I thought it was really good. “Mama used to say mountains gave her hope for life’s problems. ‘Cause they have an uphill climb on one side, and a downward slide on the other. No matter what kind of problem you have, Mama used to say that you could always count on there being a downward slide eventually.”

I have always loved looking at the mountains in northern Utah, where I live, because they are so big and beautiful. This quote changed the way I thought of mountains forever. It’s true that our trials have an uphill climb. Some days, for those of us dealing with chronic health issues, that uphill climb may seem never-ending and very exhausting as we face every day, not knowing when that climb will end. Sometimes I feel like every day is an uphill climb with my health.

It’s also true that those hard days come to an end, and there is hope that the next day will be easier. But maybe what changes the most on those better days is my attitude about the day. I have been dealing with many hard days with my health lately. For me, the downward slide this quote talks about comes on the better days when my health isn’t as bad and I can get more accomplished.

It’s a daily struggle with my attitude about my health lately. On the more difficult days, it is naturally harder for me to feel gratitude and hope in my soul. On the better days, it is naturally easier to have those feelings. What gets me through every day is that there is always hope that tomorrow will be better. I know that I am never alone in my trials. My Heavenly Father and my Savior are aware of what I face and are there for me always. That fills my soul with peace and hope. Sometimes the relief may be a better day, a shift in perspective, or the peace I receive from God.

What helps you find hope when you feel like you’re facing an uphill climb in life? Have you ever experienced a difficult season when a change in your perspective helped you find more peace? If so, what helped you?
