When Mistakes Become Stepping Stones

My Daily Musings-October 1st, 2026

“Don’t carry your mistakes around with you. Instead, place them under your feet and use them as stepping stones.”

We all make mistakes. We all have regrets and things we wish we could have done differently. We all fail occasionally to measure up to the person we think we should be. I used to get upset with myself over every little mistake. But that attitude took away part of my happiness and peace. Over the years, I have learned not to expect perfection from myself and others. When I give myself and others more grace and kindness, it helps me feel happier and more at peace.

I love the idea behind this thought that we can place our mistakes under our feet and use them as stepping stones. We should learn from our mistakes instead of being hard on ourselves for those things. We are on this earth partly to learn and grow through our mistakes. Sometimes I do get overwhelmed by my shortcomings because I’m human and I fail so often. But I try not to let those things stop me from progressing on my journey. I don’t think our Heavenly Father would want us to dwell on our past mistakes. I think He would want us to learn from them so we can become better and more like Him.

What “stepping stone” have you gained from a past mistake? What helps you move forward instead of dwelling on your mistakes?
