When God’s Plan Looks Different Than Mine

“Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” — Psalm 37:4

I’ve thought a lot about this verse lately.

Because I do delight in the Lord. I love Him. I trust Him. And yet… some of the deepest desires of my heart haven’t been fulfilled.

I’ve longed for things that never came to pass. Things that were good, righteous, and full of love. And I know I’m not alone—so many of us carry quiet hopes that haven’t been answered the way we imagined.

So what does this verse really mean?

Maybe it doesn’t mean that God grants every desire exactly as we see it. Maybe it means that as we draw closer to Him, He changes us, softens us, and helps us carry those desires differently.

Maybe He gives us Himself—His peace, His understanding, His strength—so that even when life doesn’t look the way we hoped, our hearts are still held.

Can we still choose to delight in Him, even when some prayers feel unanswered?

Can we trust that His plan is not a denial of our desires, but a deeper, eternal fulfillment we can’t yet fully see?

I don’t have all the answers. But I’m learning that trusting Him doesn’t mean I stop longing—it means I place those longings in His hands.
