Backstory:
While listening to the audiobook, The Lumber Baron’s Wife by Lynn Austin, I was intrigued by the story of one of the main characters because she and her husband lost their 3 young children to illness. She said that she didn’t think that she had healed from that grief. This made me wonder to myself, “How do we know if we have been healed from grief, loss, trauma or just the hard trials we face in this life?” This made me think that a physical scar like a cut eventually heals and fades and we can’t see it anymore. But emotional scars take longer to heal and sometimes they don’t fade as fast or at all. But because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can heal from those times and feel hope to move on.
Held While Healing
We have physical scars that fade over time,
And we can’t see them anymore so we think we are fine.
Then we experience hard losses and trauma in this life,
That take much longer to heal and cause us great strife,
Some days, we feel more healing has been done in our heart
And that we could move on and make a fresh new start.
We feel that the emotional weight has lifted off our shoulder,
So that our heart doesn’t feel like it is carrying a huge boulder.
Then other days, we might feel that our heart is broken
Because of the emotional toll of the words that are unspoken.
We might feel alone and like no one knows the trials we face,
And we wish we could be in a better emotional space.
Those are the times when we need to feel hope,
And that we are understood so we can more easily cope.
Just when we are feeling the deepest despair,
That is when our Savior, Jesus Christ will be there.
He has felt all of our pains, sorrows and losses before,
And He knows because of those feelings, our heart can feel sore.
Jesus will help us feel better when we need to heal,
And He will carry us when our sorrows are real.
The Takeaway: When we experience emotional trials that take a toll on our heart and mind, we may wonder if we will ever feel hope again. But, there is always hope because of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He has felt all of our sorrows and losses and only He can help us heal from those scars.
