Backstory:
The Declaration of Independence declares that "all men are created equal." Those words remind me of an even greater truth—we are all children of our Heavenly Father, equal in His sight and deeply loved by Him. The world gives us many labels, but they can never define our eternal worth. This writing imagines the day when every earthly label falls away, revealing the only one that has ever truly mattered: beloved child.
The Only Label That Remains
I like to imagine that someday after the days of my life are done,
I will stand before my Heavenly Father and the victory will be won.
I will talk with Him about my life on this earth
And He will let me know of my Divine Worth.
He won’t be concerned about the labels I wore in this life,
But what He will ask me is if I was a good wife.
He won’t care about how I look on the outside,
But He will care about my heart on the inside.
It won’t matter to Him if I was rich or poor
Or what other labels in this life I wore.
He will ask if I served my fellowmen with all of my heart,
And if I made the world a better place and did my part.
As I talk with my Father I will see in His eyes the love He has for me,
And seeing myself from His Loving perspective will fill my heart with glee.
I will tell Him how much I have longed to be in His sight,
And then He will tell me that everything will be alright.
I will embrace Him as my Beloved Father,
And I will know that to Him I am never a bother.
Then He will tell me how much He loves me
As I fall at His feet on bended knee.
The Takeaway: The world may define us by the labels we carry, but God never does. Our value has never depended on our circumstances, abilities, appearance, or accomplishments. It has always rested in the simple, unchanging truth that we are His children. Long after every earthly label has faded away, His love will remain, and so will the identity that has always been ours: beloved child.
