I once read this line in the book, The Light on Horn Island:

“Maybe the question we should ask ourselves is not ‘why do bad things happen to good people?’, but ‘how can we help the good people through those bad times?’”

It can be hard to understand why good people face painful trials. Sometimes, when we look at others, it seems like their lives are easier—like they move through life without the same struggles we carry. But the truth is, everyone has trials. Some are visible, and some are quietly carried.

The grass often looks greener on the other side, but we rarely see the storms that have passed through it.

The Bible teaches us a better question to ask and a better way to respond:

“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

Instead of asking why suffering exists, maybe we can ask who needs us today. A kind word, a listening ear, a prayer, or simply sitting with someone in their pain can be a powerful way to show love. This is one of the ways we reflect the compassion of Jesus Christ—by helping each other through the hard moments, not trying to explain them away.

Sometimes, being present is the answer.

Here are a couple questions to ask yourself:

Who in my life might be quietly struggling right now, and how can I help bear their burden today? How can I better live the law of Christ by showing compassion to others—and allowing others to help me when I struggle?
