Backstory:
I like the story in Matthew 19:16-30 about the rich man who asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus told him to keep the commandments. The man told Jesus that He had done that since his youth. Then, Jesus told him to sell all of his possessions, give the money to the poor and follow Him. The rich man, unable to part with his wealth, sadly left. This made me ask myself a couple questions: “Would I be willing to give up everything I have to follow Jesus? And is my faith in Jesus so priceless that I treasure it above anything?”

Giving All to Follow Him

Sometimes I think that we value our earthly riches too much.
Yes, it’s nice to have the latest technology, but are those things for us spiritually just a crutch?
I personally love my smartphone and any cool new device,
But do I love it so much that it has become to me a real vice?

I think we should imagine that if Jesus showed up on our door one day,
Would we put our devices down and hear what He had to say?
If He asked us to give up our worldly wealth,
Would we be able to do it for better spiritual health?

If He asked us to follow Him like His disciples of old,
Would we think that opportunity would be more priceless than gold?
Or would we tell Him that we couldn’t do that
Because our earthly treasures were too good to look at?

Jesus will come again and we need to be ready,
We need to make sure that our faith is more steady.
We should fill our faith lamps with Jesus’ priceless oil
So that spiritually we can feel free from trouble and toil.

Is my faith in Jesus and my religion more priceless than gold?
For my earthly riches will eventually get old.
Would I be willing to give up everything and follow Jesus?
Or are the riches of this world my big weakness?

The Takeaway: Sometimes I think we value our worldly possessions too much. If Jesus came to your door and asked you to give up all that you owned and to follow Him, could you do that? We should prepare now for Jesus’ second coming by putting more oil in our faith lamps so that we are prepared when He comes again.
