The Backstory

“There are thoughts which are prayers. There are moments when, whatever the posture of the body, the soul is on its knees.”
— Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

This quote by Victor Hugo really made me ponder and research the meaning behind it. In 1843, his daughter passed away, and during much of the time he was writing Les Misérables, he was living in exile from France.

When he speaks of “a soul on its knees,” he is talking about anyone who feels broken, alone, humbled, searching, grateful, or simply reaching toward God. I think we all have those moments in our lives when our bodies and minds are so weary that we cry out to our Father in prayer for relief.

A Soul’s Prayer

We all have felt alone a time or two,
Because no one understands us and we feel blue.
Our trials hang so heavy on our weary shoulders,
That it feels like we carry huge boulders.
When our bodies are so weary from the weight
And we can’t seem to get our minds straight.
So we try to fix our problems all on our own,
Because we think that our worries and cares are unknown.
Just when we feel the darkness try to creep into our souls,
And we don’t know if we can make it anymore in our various roles.
That’s when we cry out to our Heavenly Father on bended knee,
Even though we can’t articulate the words, we send out a plea.
We plead to our Father in Heaven
That He will be with us without question.
Our soul feels so weary that we surrender to His will,
Because He has a plan for us to fulfill.
We share our innermost thoughts in our soul’s prayer,
Pleading with our Father to always be there.
He is there when we need Him any time of the day,
Because He loves us more than we could ever say.

The Takeaway

Sometimes the weight of the burdens that we carry becomes so great that we don’t know if we can make it anymore. Our soul starts to feel the burden and we don’t know what to do. That’s when we should drop to our knees and pray to our Heavenly Father. We can reach Him any time of the day, and He will hear the thoughts and intents of our hearts and souls. He will always be there for us because we are His children, and He loves us very much.

Surrender, Humility, and Growth

My Daily Musings-August 19th, 2026

My husband and I have been watching the show, The Chosen in the Wild, where Bear Grylls takes some of the cast of the show, The Chosen, on an adventure in the wild. He talks to them about the show and their lives.

Dallas Jenkins, the producer of The Chosen, was on an episode I watched recently. After he did a very physical challenge across a river, he said that “surrender and humility always precede growth.” That could be applied to our lives. We all have hard trials that feel like they might break us at times. But if we are humble, trust in our Heavenly Father, and completely surrender to His will, we can grow and develop into the people He wants us to be.

It is hard for me to surrender to my Heavenly Father’s will that having chronic illness symptoms that disrupt my every day life is what I need to experience now. But I trust that He will help me make it through every day, and experience joy in the journey along the way.

It is hard to surrender our will to our Father’s will because we don’t know what is going to happen next. We need to have faith that our Heavenly Father has a plan for each one of us, that He has a purpose for our lives, and that He can do more good in our lives than we ever could.

Have you ever gone through a difficult experience that helped you grow in ways you didn’t expect? What does surrendering your will to God’s will mean to you?

When the Yoke Becomes Light

My Daily Musings-March 12th, 2026

Some days the burdens we carry feel heavier than we think we can bear. Illness, worry, grief, uncertainty—at times it can feel like too much for one heart or body to hold.

I recently heard a line from The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer:
“For those who submit, the yoke is easy and the burden is light.”

At first that feels almost confusing. Life doesn’t suddenly become easy when we choose to follow Christ. The burdens don’t magically disappear.

But something in us changes.

When we submit our hearts to Him—when we trust that He sees us, heals us, and walks beside us—He strengthens us to carry what once felt unbearable. The weight may still be there, but we are no longer carrying it alone.

Some of the hardest days of my life, especially when my health feels like a heavy load, are the days when this truth matters most. My strength alone isn’t enough. But His grace is.

And somehow, with Him beside me, I take another step.

What burdens feel heavy on your shoulders today?
What might change if you placed them, even for a moment, into the hands of the Savior who walks with you?
