The Voice Beyond the Mirror

Backstory:
When the prophet Samuel was sent to anoint a new king of Israel, he naturally assumed that the strongest, tallest, and most impressive-looking son of Jesse would be God's choice. But the Lord taught Samuel an important lesson: "for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7)

As humans, we often do the same thing. We judge others—and ourselves—by outward appearances, mistakes, weaknesses, and imperfections. We stand before the mirror and see all the things we wish we could change. But our Heavenly Father sees much more than our reflection. He sees our desires, our faith, our efforts, our struggles, and our divine potential. He knows us perfectly and loves us perfectly.

The Voice Beyond the Mirror

I look in the mirror and see each and every flaw,
And I tell myself that I don’t measure up and so I withdraw.
My Heavenly Father looks at me and He sees my heart,
And He loves me so much that to Him, I am a work of art.

I see my imperfections and the mistakes I have made,
And I tell myself that I am below the grade.
My Heavenly Father doesn’t measure me by my flaws,
For He sees my efforts every day and gives me applause.

I call myself foolish when I fail again and again,
And I’m way more critical of myself than of my fellowmen.
My Loving Father looks at me and sees my divine potential,
He sees past my flaws and knows that I can be successful.

I see how far I have left to go
Because all of my weaknesses I know.
My Father sees the desires of my heart
And He knows that I’m trying to do my part.

When my Heavenly Father looks at me in the mirror,
He sees my divine nature and potential as the picture.
He sees past my flaws and looks at my desires on the inside,
And because He loves me perfectly, He will always be by my side.

The Takeaway: The next time you find yourself focusing on your flaws, remember that your Heavenly Father sees far beyond what is reflected in the mirror. He sees your heart, your goodness, your sincere efforts, and the person you are becoming through Jesus Christ. His view of you is infinitely more complete—and far more loving—than your own.

Following the One We Trust

My Daily Musings-June 3rd, 2026

C.S. Lewis once said, “There would be no sense in saying you trusted Jesus if you would not take his advice.”

That quote made me stop and think about what trust really means.

When we trust a close friend or family member, we are often willing to listen to their counsel because we know they care about us and want what is best for us. We may not always understand their perspective at first, but our trust in them makes us more willing to follow their advice.

How much more should that be true of Jesus Christ?

If we truly trust Him, wouldn’t we want to follow the counsel He has given us? Throughout His ministry, Jesus taught us to feed His sheep, keep His commandments, love one another, forgive others, and abide in Him. His counsel is not meant to restrict us but to guide us toward greater peace, joy, and spiritual strength.

Sometimes His teachings ask us to do things that are difficult or uncomfortable. In those moments, do we trust Him enough to follow even when we don’t fully understand? Do our actions reflect the trust we say we have in Him?

I believe that trust in Jesus is more than believing He exists or knowing His teachings. Trust is demonstrated when we choose to follow Him day by day, step by step. As we do, we discover that His advice is always rooted in perfect love, perfect wisdom, and a perfect understanding of what we need.

The more we trust Him, the more willing we become to follow Him—and the more clearly we see that He truly knows the way.

Giving Our Whole Self to God

My Daily Musings-May 8th, 2026

C.S. Lewis once said, “Until you have given up your self to Him you will not have a real self.”

I love that the quote says your self instead of yourself. To me, it feels like an invitation to give every part of who we are to God—our heart, soul, fears, hopes, weaknesses, and desires. Sometimes we hold pieces of ourselves back, afraid we are too flawed or too broken. But our Father in Heaven has never looked at us with anything less than perfect love.

What if becoming our truest self doesn’t come from focusing more on ourselves, but from surrendering ourselves more fully to Him? What if we could begin to see ourselves the way He sees us?

As we place our lives in His hands, little by little, we begin to discover who we really are and who we are capable of becoming through His divine help.
