One Step Is Enough

In 1833, a man named John Henry Newman was stranded on a ship in the middle of a thick, blinding fog. He was incredibly sick, far from home, and completely powerless to move his ship forward.

In that heavy, silent dark, he sat on the deck and wrote a poem. He didn’t ask God to clear the fog or show him the entire journey home. He just prayed:

“Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see the distant scene; one step enough for me.”

Living with chronic illness often feels exactly like being stuck in that fog. There are so many days when I cannot see how the future will unfold, how my health will fare, or how I’m going to make it through the month. It’s easy to panic when the horizon is completely hidden.

But this hymn reminds me that I don’t need to see the distant scene. Grace is given to us in daily, quiet portions—just enough light for the very next step.

I sat down to sing the first verse of “Lead, Kindly Light” a cappella. I hope it brings a moment of quiet peace to your day today.

👇 Let’s Walk Together: When the fog rolls into your life, what is the “one step” that helps you keep your footing? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
