What a Reunion It Must Have Been

My Daily Musings-August 21st, 2026

I heard this in a talk by President Gordon B. Hinckley, and it stayed with me. “What a reunion it must have been, to be embraced by the Father, who loved Him and who also must have wept for Him during His hours of agony.”

I have often thought about how hard it must have been for our Heavenly Father to watch His Beloved Son suffer the way He did. I’m sure there was a lot of weeping in heaven and on earth when He suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane and was nailed to the cross. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for our Father to give His Beloved Son to us to suffer for us. He knew what was going to happen, and He knew there was hope coming in the Resurrection, but it still must have been so hard to watch and not be able to do anything to help Him.

I love that this quote focuses on the reunion between the Father and Jesus after He finished His work on the earth. I’m sure our Heavenly Father embraced Him and said something like, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” I’m sure He was so proud of His Beloved Son and all that He accomplished while He was on the earth.

It also must have been an amazing reunion for Jesus, knowing that He had accomplished all that His Father sent Him to earth to do. They must have both been so filled with joy that we can’t even comprehend at that glorious moment of their reunion on the other side.

This also made me wonder what a great reunion we will all have when we embrace the Father and the Son after this earth life is over. Hopefully I will be worthy to embrace both of them and hear the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

How does thinking about one day being reunited with the Father and the Son bring you hope? What do you hope to hear when you one day stand before God?

Backstory:
I heard recently from Jamal Willis, a former BYU football player, that life is like a football game. Our Heavenly Father is the Head Coach. We are all on His team. He is the best coach and He knows how to coach us so that we can make it through life safely. With His eternal game plan, we will never lose. We are all different and unique, but on His team, we are all needed and loved.

On God’s Team

We are all players on our Heavenly Father’s football team,
And because He is the perfect Head Coach, we are living the dream.
He has the best eternal play book in front of Him
As we practice our plays to perfection in His amazing gym.

The difficult drills we practice over and over again
Help strengthen our spiritual muscles so we can more easily win.
Our Father sees the whole field while we see only a fraction of it,
And He knows how to get us safely to the endzone so we don’t get hit.

Prayer is the huddle that we need to receive guidance from our Coach
So that we know where to go and how to make the best approach.
The opposing team studies and knows our every weakness,
But our Coach knows how to outsmart them so we can be fearless.

Every player on the team has a unique position and purpose,
But we all contribute to the team’s success on the surface.
When we get injured, Jesus as our Master Physician
Will help us heal so we can get back to our position.

Our Coach doesn’t ask us to win every play,
He just asks us to trust Him so that we don’t stray.
When we stumble on the field, Jesus will never leave us behind,
Because He loves us so much and He is always so kind.

The Takeaway: In this game we call life, our Father in Heaven is the best Head Coach ever. He knows the end from the beginning. We all face hard trials that will make us feel bruised and broken at times. But we need to trust in our Coach so that we can get safety home to Him after the game is over and victory is won.

A Heart That Yearns For More

Backstory:
I recently came across this quote by C.S. Lewis: "The fact that our heart yearns for something Earth can't supply is proof that Heaven must be our home." It made me think about how this world can meet many of our physical needs, yet our souls still long for something more. We can find peace and strength as we pray, worship, and draw closer to the Savior, but there remains a deep yearning that earthly things can never fully satisfy. Like the song Temporary Home reminds us, this world is not our forever home. Perhaps that longing in our hearts is God's gentle reminder that we were made for eternity. 

A Heart That Yearns For More

My dear and loving Father in Heaven,
I feel Your presence in my life without question.
I am human and I enjoy the material things of this earth,
That can satisfy me for just a moment because I am of divine worth.

Food and drink for my body are good for my health,
But they don’t satisfy my needs forever like spiritual wealth.
A nice home and car are good to have in this life,
But they don’t fill my needs and make me free from strife.

Knowledge and education are great for the mind,
But my spirit needs more understanding than I can find.
Success and accomplishments can help my worries cease,
But my spirit yearns for what only You can supply, and that’s peace.

My soul and spirit long to be by Your side again
To be in Your paradise and away from all the worries of men.
Please, Father, help me to enjoy my life every day,
And help me to be the best version of myself along the way.

When my time on this earth is done,
Please help me feel peace because of Your Beloved Son.
Sometimes I can’t wait for the Heavenly reunion ahead,
When I can embrace You again and my soul will finally be fed.

The Takeaway: If you've ever felt a longing that nothing in this world seems to satisfy, perhaps it isn't because something is missing from your life. Perhaps it's because God has placed eternity in your heart. Let that longing turn your thoughts toward Him and remind you that the best things are still to come. This earth may be our temporary home, but our forever home is with our Savior.
