Backstory:
As I read the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17, I wondered what the experience might have been like for one of David's older brothers. They had watched the giant Goliath intimidate Israel's army day after day, and like everyone else, they likely believed no one could defeat him. Then along came their younger brother—a shepherd boy armed with only a sling, a few stones, and unwavering faith in God. This writing imagines the thoughts of an older brother who witnessed firsthand how faith in the Lord can accomplish what human strength alone never could.
The Battle Is the Lord’s
Growing up with brothers, David was the one who stood out to me,
For he always had unwavering faith in God as you will see.
We heard of a giant named Goliath who terrorized the vicinity
Because of his crazy stature, his strength and in battle his ability.
No one had stood against him and lived to tell the tale,
And no matter what we did to get him to leave, we did fail.
One day, my youngest brother David came to the village with great vigor
And he told us that he would defeat Goliath, even though he was bigger.
I tried to talk him out of this task but to no avail
Because I thought that he would definitely fail.
David had 5 stones and in his hand his sling,
And nothing else but his incredible faith in God did he bring.
He came to meet Goliath running and I prayed hard for his protection,
But in the space where we were there was great tension.
David had unwavering faith as he loosed the first stone
And the giant fell to the earth with a huge groan.
Everyone rejoiced because the big giant was at last vanquished,
And all of the fears of the people along with him had vanished.
Our family was so proud of our youngest brother and his courage
As well as his amazing faith to save everyone in the village.
The Takeaway: We all face giants in our lives—challenges, fears, illnesses, and uncertainties that can seem overwhelming. Like David, we may feel small in comparison to what stands before us. Yet David's victory reminds us that our greatest strength comes not from ourselves, but from trusting in God. When we place our faith in Him, we can face life's giants with courage, knowing that nothing is greater than His power.
