The Prayer of a Child

Backstory:

I have been thinking lately about how much prayer to my Heavenly Father has been important to me. It is like a lifeline to me or like a life vest if I was drowning. Some days when I get discouraged, prayer is one of the only things that help me get through my day. Growing up in a religious family, prayer was always important to us. I remember praying as a family in the morning and at night, also at mealtimes and other times as well. That is probably why I have such a strong belief in the power of prayer now as an adult. Here’s a story from my childhood about prayer.

The Prayer of a Child

Once there was a young girl named Christine of around 5 years old,

She had a great family and for her they were worth more than gold.

She loved her 2 big sisters and her parents,

She and her family together had great moments.

One day they all went to an animal shelter,

They wanted a dog and things got better and better.

They saw and played with the cutest and most furry puppy ever,

Especially through the eyes of Christine she wanted that puppy forever.

But there were other people ahead of them for the puppy in line,

And her parents reassured her that if they didn’t get that puppy then everything would be fine.

Christine really wanted that puppy in all her little girl heart,

Her parents had taught her to pray and she thought that would be a good place to start.

So during family prayer that night,

Christine asked if they could get that puppy with all of her might.

Then her family got a call a while later that the puppy was theirs,

Christine was so happy that her face was full of tears.

She knew that her Heavenly Father would come through,

And this was evidence of that from her little girl view.

This moment started her belief in prayer as a real power,

And she knew that her Heavenly Father listened to her no matter the hour.

The Takeaway: We have moments in our lives that help shape our beliefs and our faith. This story started my strong belief that my Heavenly Father is always there for me and will hear and answer my prayers. As an adult, I have learned that sometimes they aren’t answered in the way I want but they are answered anyway.

Our Prayer Bridge

Backstory:

I saw a Facebook post that I really liked. It said, “Prayer is the bridge between our struggles and God’s strength, turning whispers of hope into echoes of miracles.” I like the imagery of prayer being a bridge. A bridge connects two separated places. So prayer is what spans the distance between where we are and where God is. We don’t have to figure out how to cross that distance on our own-prayer creates the way.

Our Prayer Bridge

We all have struggles that make us feel weak, small or even alone,

And we might feel like we have to do this life all on our own.

We have a Loving Father who for us will always care,

He isn’t far away and He will answer our every prayer.

In our moments of weakness when we feel like we can’t hang on any longer,

We just need to kneel to our Father in prayer and we will through Him become stronger.

We should picture in our heads a bridge that connects us to our Heavenly Father,

We can be connected with Him in just a moment and to Him we are never a bother.

When we pray, we don’t need to rely on our strength anymore,

And if we trust in Him, then we can more easily get up off the floor.

With our Father by our side, the impossible becomes possible,

Even though we might feel weak, together we can overcome any obstacle.

Our Father isn’t here with us physically

But we can feel Him with us spiritually.

He can take our smallest hopes

And transform them into blessings so that we can more easily cope.

Prayer shouldn’t be just a ritual that we do

When we are feeling especially blue.

It should feel like a bridge to heaven

That helps us connect to our Father’s power without question.

The Takeaway: We are not meant to go through our struggles in this life alone. Our Loving Heavenly Father is always there for us. Even though He isn’t here with us physically, we can think of prayer as a bridge to connect us to Him. Through prayer, we can be blessed with strength, peace and hope to keep going, especially during our hardest moments.

What Prayer Is To The Soul

Backstory:

I read a quote from Corrie Ten Boom on Facebook that I really liked. It said, “What wings are to a bird, and sails are to a ship, so is prayer to the soul.” As a person who truly believes that prayer is important, this quote really resonated with me in my soul. I think the only reason I have made it through some hard times in my life is because I knew that I could pray to my Heavenly Father and that He would hear and answer my prayers. I really rely on prayer to help me, especially on my hardest days.

What Prayer Is To The Soul

Wings are not an accessory to a bird but they are essential

So that the bird can fly and fulfill its potential.

Wings allow a bird to rise above the ground,

They help it feel free and like its purpose can be found.

Prayer lifts the soul above earthly limitations

So it can feel free from its daily irritations.

Without prayer, the soul may still be alive,

But it will be unable to soar toward its Creator and thrive.

A ship can float without a sail

But it won’t fulfill its purpose and in strong winds, it might fail.

Sails allow a ship to move forward

And by yielding to the wind it can move onward.

Prayer opens the soul so that it can commune with its Creator,

And so that it can feel in line with nature.

As humans on this earth,

We are not meant to navigate on our own from our birth.

Praying to our Loving Father in Heaven

Should be as necessary to us as a bird to its wings without question.

When we pray, our soul is lifted, our heart is aligned

And our God becomes near and personal so that our soul can feel refined.

The Takeaway: We are not meant to navigate this life on our own. We have a Loving Heavenly Father who is waiting and willing to hear and answer our prayers. Just like a bird needs its wings and a ship needs its sails to move forward in life, our soul needs to pray to our Maker. We should feel that need deep within our souls.

Inclining His Ear To Us

Backstory:

I came across this scripture in Psalms 116:1-2 and I really liked it. It says, “I love the Lord, because He hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because He hath inclined His ear unto me, therefore will I call upon Him as long as I live.” I like the imagery of our Heavenly Father inclining His ear to us. To incline one’s ear means to lean toward someone, to give focused, intentional attention or to listen with care, not casually or from a distance. This scripture reassures us that our Father is not distant, distracted or indifferent to us. He loves us so much and He is always available to talk with us.

Inclining His Ear To Us

Our Heavenly Father loves us so much,

And through prayer we can feel His Loving Touch.

He will always hear our voices when we speak to Him,

And knowing this should make our problems seem less grim.

He hears our pleas when we are feeling weak, in need or desperate,

And to Him, our worries are always legitimate.

Our relationship with Him is ongoing, not one-sided,

And when we turn our hearts and pray to Him, He is always delighted.

We are never praying into silence,

He is always there to give us His guidance.

Because He always has His ears inclined to hear our many pleas,

We can feel better when we get up off our knees.

Our Father always listens to us personally any time of the day,

And He will hear whatever we have to say.

Our prayers always matter to our Loving Father,

And to Him, we are never a bother.

So, how can we incline our ears more to hear what our Father has to say to us?

We can listen as much as we speak when we pray for that would be a plus.

We can trust more in His timing and His plan for our lives,

So that with Him as our Listening Ear, we can more easily thrive.

The Takeaway: We can always trust that our Loving Father in Heaven is always there to hear us any time of the day. He is always leaning towards us, waiting for us to reach out to Him. As we turn our ears toward Him, our relationship will grow stronger with every prayer.
