Backstory:
I saw a facebook post by Patrick Risk that I really liked. He mentioned the scripture in Luke 22:42. Jesus was in the midst of suffering for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane. He said in agony, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine be done.” The fact that Jesus was in incredible agony at that moment and then said “nevertheless” is significant. It expresses His human desire to avoid suffering while ultimately submitting to God the Father’s will for the sake of humanity’s redemption.
The Power of Nevertheless
Jesus while suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane
Felt all of the pains we would ever know, and He did it for you and for me.
His Father allowed Him to experience those things so He would have compassion for us
And because of that suffering He always knows how we feel, which is always a plus.
In that moment of greatest agony ever known,
He asked if this suffering could be taken from Him and He felt all alone.
But He knew that we needed Him to endure this suffering
Because our sins and pains He was covering.
So, He willingly submitted and said, “Nevertheless”,
For He knew that with that submission, our lives would forever be blessed.
He set the example for us of ultimate surrender and obedience,
And because of that example we can feel His love in all of its radiance.
He paid the ultimate price so that we don’t have to pay it,
And when we feel all alone we can imagine that with us He will always sit.
When we are in darkness and despair,
We should be willing like Jesus and with Him declare,
That we willingly submit to our Father in Heaven
And that we will do what He asks without question.
Jesus can help us when we are in pain
Because He paid the ultimate price and for that He will always reign.
The Takeaway: We can learn a lot from the example of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane for our pains, sins, trials and anything we suffer in this life. He submitted to His Father’s will even though it was very hard and painful. Only Jesus knows how we feel at any moment, but especially when we are suffering. We should be like Jesus and willingly submit to anything our Father wants us to do, even if it is hard and painful.
